Curling Terminology

Curling Terminology:

House: Are the rings at each end of the ice. The house makes up the scoring area. The outer ring is the 12 foot (its 12 feet in diameter), then it’s the 8 foot, 4 foot, and button.

Rocks: The rocks are your possible points, the most points any team can get in one end is 8. They are made of granite and weigh 43 pounds.

Hacks: These are the black “starting blocks” at each end of the ice. You use these to throw the rocks. It is important that we keep the rocks from hitting the hacks, to keep them from being damaged.

End: An end is like a frame in bowling, once you throw all 16 rocks to the opposite end that end is over.

Backline: Is the line closest to the hacks. It is at the very back of the rings. Once a rock has completely crossed the backline it is out of play.

T-Line: This is the line running through the middle of the house. When the oppositions rock crosses that line you are allowed to sweep it.

Hogline: Is the line that a rock must cross at the opposite end of the ice. If a rock lands between the hoglines it is out of play. If a rock lands on the hogline it is out of play.

Clockwise Turn: When throwing the rocks we put a turn on them to control which way they will curl down the ice. If you turn the rock clockwise it will curl towards the left.

Counter Clockwise Turn: When throwing the rocks we put a turn on them to control which way they will curl down the ice. If you turn the rock counter clockwise it will curl towards the right.
