RCC Closed for Curling Until January 2022

UPDATE 5 August 2021: Our 2021-22 season will be delayed until January 2022 as we need a new ice plant. Further updates will be provided as we move forward with this project. Read our latest update here.

A Message from the President
On behalf of the Board of Directors, I like to wish everyone a Happy New Year! 2020 was unprecedented as the club was able to manage the uncertainty from COVID19. A special thank you to our staff that has tried to move the club forward during this difficult time.
With the PHO, the club has basically been closed since early December. Over the holidays, our staff detected an ammonia leak in our plant, which under normal circumstances we would have repaired promptly. Considering all the uncertainty during the second wave we have decided to prioritize safety of our members, staff and the general public and thus have decided to end the season and remove the ice. The Board will meet in short order to formalize a plan to refund/credit curlers that have already paid their league dues.
With the start of the new year, we will pivot and focus our attention on the upcoming season. Although there won’t be curling in the near term we are actively working on key priorities. First and foremost we are engaged with the City of Richmond with respect to our aging facility. We hope to have more to communicate in the short to midterm. Second, we are exploring new ways to be active in the community given our large footprint. Feel free to reach out to our staff with ideas. Lastly, we will look to improve the member and curling experience by making key time investment in updating and streamlining our operation.
Our club is not immune to the impacts of COVID19 as we walk a fine financial tight rope. A special thank you to our treasurer, Guido Amantea, for guiding us through this as we have been actively applying for all the grants available to the club.
If you want to help the club through this difficult period there are several options. First, Theresa, our Bar Manager, has done a fabulous job of creating a charcuterie platter for purchase which then allows you to purchase bulk alcohol from us at a very reasonable price. This is a COVID relief program that is available to us for the next 3 months. Therefore if you normally buy from a liquor store, please consider purchasing the charcuterie and liquor from the club during this period. Theresa will be happy to help you. Please contact Theresa theresa@richmondcurling.com for further details. Second, you can donate to a couple of programs we have at the club. We have the adopt a rock program and we have a junior curling program (Syl Roberts). Please contact Janice janice@richmondcurling.com for further details. Lastly, we need volunteers who want to see the club be active in the community and ensure curling has a place in Richmond. Over the coming months we intend reach out for help.
Again, I want to thank everyone for their understanding. We fully intended to have a season based on our survey during the summer but it just wasn’t meant to be.
Stay safe and healthy!
Nick Hsu

Holiday Update

Dear Members,
As we head into the Christmas break, we have some news items to share with you.

UPCOMING SURVEY
Late next week, please watch for a new survey as we will be asking for your feedback about the potential for a spring season should the health orders lift and we are able to re-open for regular curling.

Board of Directors Update
We held a successful AGM on December 16 and the 2020-21 executive was appointed December 21. Welcome Nick Hsu as our 2020-21 President, Guido Amantea Treasurer, Louise Young Secretary, and Lorraine Warn Past President. The vice president position is currently vacant. We also have 4 open positions on the board so if you are a society member and are interested in supporting the club with your time and expertise, please email the office for further information.

Practice Ice
We opened for practice ice on December 14 and many of our members have been taking advantage of the opportunity. If you would like to register for practice ice, please follow these important steps:
1. 48 hours (2 days) advance notice is required; please email office@richmondcurling.com with your requested date/time(s). We would appreciate if you could please specify a date and time you want to book rather than ask “what’s available”. This will save a lot of time emailing back and forth. Please visit the club website for the current schedule.
2. The office will reply and confirm your preferred time and send you a link to register and pay the required fee. Payment is due in advance, no exceptions.
3. Visit the practice ice policy page for more info.

Charcuterie and Wine!
If you are celebrating the season with your household bubble and would like to support the club at the same time, we can help make it a little extra special and save you some time and effort. Order our charcuterie platter for 2 and a bottle of wine (or two or 12) from us and we’ll prepare and have your order ready for pickup curbside at the club by the next day. Theresa has curated a selection of meats, cheeses and accompaniments for a delightful treat at home, and you can choose your preferred wine from our list of in-house selections or pre-order your favourite from us to bring in special for you. If you are interested, please email office@richmondcurling.com for our menus and pricing.

Consider for a last-minute Christmas treat, romantic fireside with your sweetie, streaming binge-night, a New Year’s Eve toast to a forgettable 2020 and cheers to a better 2021, or for no reason at all!

On behalf of the Board of Directors and staff, may you have a peaceful, healthy and safe holiday however you observe the season. We look forward to a renewed year of new beginnings, and may 2021 bring us the literal shot in the arm we all have well and truly earned!
